The plane touches down in Paris. The seatbelt sign is still on, and my phone is already loading the map to the hotel.
No roaming bill waiting for me at home. No hunting for airport Wi-Fi that crawls, drops and sends my data over an open network.
Those are still the two defaults for most travelers. Data roaming on a home plan can turn a week away into a painful bill. Public Wi-Fi is slow, patchy and open to anyone on the same network.
That moment is why I have used Airalo since 2020. I travel across Europe every month, and I keep one Airalo Europe eSIM on my phone and top it up before each trip. It has become as routine as packing a charger.
This is my honest review: how it works, how it works alongside your own number, the catch with the unlimited plan, and who should choose something else.
What is the Airalo Europe eSIM?
The Airalo Europe eSIM is a digital SIM that gives you mobile data in 41 European countries on one plan, with no physical card to swap.
An eSIM is a SIM card that lives in your phone’s software. You buy it in the Airalo app, install it in a few taps, and your phone connects to a partner network when you land.
Airalo calls its Europe plan Eurolink. The country list goes past the usual France-Italy-Spain route. It includes Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Ukraine and the Balkans. That matters if your trip wanders east. Most people discover the gap in their eSIM’s coverage at a border. I prefer to discover it before I book.
Airalo is not small. The company says more than 30 million people use it, with local, regional and global eSIMs for over 200 destinations.
Do I keep my own phone number with Airalo?
Yes. Your everyday SIM stays in your phone and keeps your number. The only thing that moves to the Airalo eSIM is your mobile data.
This is the part most people miss, and it is the reason I would never travel without it. My home SIM stays on as my primary line. Calls, texts, WhatsApp, Viber, bank codes, everything still reaches me on the number my friends and family already have.
Think of it as two lanes on one road. Your home SIM handles who you are: your number. The Airalo eSIM handles how you get online: your data. WhatsApp and Viber stay linked to your own number while they run over the Airalo data.
Two settings make it work:
- Mobile data line: set it to the Airalo eSIM.
- Data roaming on your home SIM: switch it off, so your home plan never touches mobile data abroad.
One caveat: calls and texts you receive on your home line can still carry your home carrier’s roaming fees. Check your carrier’s rates for Europe before you go.
What packages does the Airalo Europe eSIM offer?
Airalo sells two kinds of Europe package: a fixed amount of data for a set number of days, or unlimited data with a daily high-speed allowance.
Prices change, so I do not list them here. The app shows the current price of every package before you pay.
For a long weekend in one city, a small fixed package is the smart buy. For a week of maps, rideshares and stories, unlimited takes the guesswork away.
What does "unlimited" mean on Airalo?
Airalo’s unlimited plans give you 3GB of high-speed data per day. After that, speed drops to 1 Mbps until your daily allowance resets.
Think of it like a hotel minibar that restocks every 24 hours. You get a full fridge each day, but empty it by noon and the afternoon is slow. The reset counts from the time you activated the eSIM, not from midnight.
At 1 Mbps, messages and maps still work. Video, large uploads and streaming slow to a crawl. For a day of maps, messages and photos, 3GB is plenty. If you upload video from the road, a large fixed package with no daily ceiling is the better buy.
The simple rule: if you use more than 3GB on a typical day, buy a fixed package. If you use less, unlimited is the stress-free option.
Can you use a hotspot with Airalo?
Yes. Airalo eSIMs support personal hotspot as long as your phone and the local network allow it, and unlimited plans set no tethering limit.
It is the backup that saves a working day. When the hotel Wi-Fi gives up during a call, switch your phone to hotspot and carry on from your laptop.
One note: on unlimited plans, hotspot data counts toward the same 3GB daily allowance.
Is the Airalo Europe eSIM fast?
Airalo’s Europe eSIM can use 5G on supported networks, and drops to 4G or LTE where 5G is weak or not offered.
You can see which networks support 5G in the app, under the Network section of each eSIM’s details. Your phone also needs to support 5G. The eSIM connects to local partner networks in each country, and the app lists which ones.
How do I set up Airalo before my trip?
Buy the eSIM in the app, install it at home on Wi-Fi, and switch it on when you land. Your validity starts when it first connects to a supported network.
Here is how to set it up before you fly:
- Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Airalo keeps a compatible device list.
- Buy your package in the Airalo app or on the website.
- Install at home on a stable internet connection. It takes a few minutes.
- Leave it off until you arrive, so you do not start the clock early.
- Land, switch it on, and set it as your mobile data line. Keep your home SIM on as your primary line, with data roaming off.
You pay by card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex and more), PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Airmoney.
When I return to Europe a few weeks later, I do not buy a new eSIM. I top up the one already on my phone. Airalo also offers renewals, which top up your package when you have 10% of your data left. Useful if you would rather never think about it.
Does the Airalo Europe eSIM include a phone number?
No. The Europe eSIM is data only, with no local phone number, calls or texts.
You do not need one. Your own number stays active on your home SIM for calls, texts, WhatsApp and Viber, as covered above.
If you need calls and texts, Airalo’s Discover+ global eSIM offers packages with data, calls and texts.
What is Airmoney?
Airmoney is Airalo’s loyalty cashback. You earn 5% to 10% back on every package you pay for, and spend it on future eSIMs.
Airalo’s loyalty program has four levels.
I reached Platinum years ago. With a top-up every month, that 10% adds up to a free package every so often. It is the same logic as an airline status: the more you fly with one brand, the less sense it makes to switch.
What are the downsides of Airalo?
The main trade-offs are the 3GB daily cap on unlimited plans, no local number on the Europe eSIM, and a country list that changes over time.
I would rather tell you now than have you find out at a train station:
- Unlimited is not endless. Heavy users should buy fixed data.
- Data only. Calls and texts stay on your home number, so check your carrier’s roaming rates for those.
- Country list changes. The count has moved between 39 and 42 over the years. Check your exact countries in the app before you buy.
- Long stays in Turkey. Airalo notes restrictions on use over 91 days there, due to local rules.
- Single-country trips. If you are spending ten days in Italy alone, compare the local Italy eSIM in the app. A country plan can cost less than a regional one.
If your trip is the EU and the UK only, Airalo also sells a separate EU and UK eSIM worth comparing.
Is Airalo legit?
Yes. Airalo is an established eSIM provider used by more than 30 million people, with 24/7 multi-language support, including WhatsApp chat.
I have used it on my Europe trips since 2020, and it is the one travel app I renew without a second thought.
How much data do I need for a trip to Europe?
It depends on your habits. Maps, messaging and browsing use little. Video, video calls and uploading content use far more.
A useful test: check your phone’s mobile data usage for the past month at home, then divide by four for a weekly figure. Travel days tend to run higher, because you lean on maps and rideshare apps more. If the number makes you nervous, unlimited removes the arithmetic.
My verdict
Airalo is still the eSIM I open before every European trip. It is not the cheapest option for every route, and unlimited has a daily ceiling. But the coverage is wide, the app is simple, top-ups take seconds, and the cashback rewards loyalty.
For a traveler who wants to land, switch on and move, that ease is the point.
If you want to compare it with other providers, I cover them in my guide to the best eSIMs for international travel. And if you are packing for Europe now, my Amazon travel must-haves list has the rest of my carry-on.
